Stop and smell the…playdoh?

Hey Reader!

I want to challenge you with something today. At some point during your day, stand up and take 60 seconds to just look around your classroom. Use some of your senses and think intentionally about what you observe.

  1. What do you SEE? A tall block tower, a child with a snotty nose, a dripping painting at the art easel…
  2. What do you HEAR? Excitement as that block tower gets taller and starts to wobble, laughter, maybe some frustration, some negotiating, singing…
  3. What do you SMELL? Playdoh, finger paints, the soap from the sink, maybe a diaper that needs changing…

So often, we get so wrapped up in the “doing” of our day that we forget to just take a moment to notice…and ENJOY… the day. Several months ago I stood with a weekday program director in an outdoor learning environment for quite a while. We just watched children. They ran, they giggled, they squealed in excitement, they picked up and carried heavy things, they helped each other, they got frustrated and moved on to a new activity. Eventually, she said “I’ve been so busy trying to get things done that I’ve forgotten what it’s like to just experience the children.” I think we can all relate. We’re doing our best to make the most of every moment in our classrooms (and in our homes, too)! In the process, sometimes we MISS the beauty of what happens naturally.

Have you been so “heads-down, let’s get this done” that you’ve missed the WONDER of what others are experiencing around you? Today – both at home and at school – take a moment and just take it all in. We’d love to hear about your experience! Hit reply and let us know!

Cheering you on this week!

  • Move, Play, Learn

Hey Reader! Did you know that movement for young children isn’t just fun (or annoying)—it’s actually essential for learning? When young children move, they strengthen brain connections, improve focus, and absorb new information more effectively. Involving the whole body actually cements the learning deeper in the brain than just rote memorization or sedentary learning. How Movement Supports Learning Boosts Brain Power – Increases oxygen flow, helping with focus and problem-solving. Builds…

  • Exit the Toddler Power Struggle With Ease Confidence

Hey Reader! Have you ever found yourself in the middle of an argument with a two year old and you realize you’re not even sure how you got here? Afterall, she’s TWO! And you’re….well, older than two! Most of us have been there – in the middle of a power struggle with a toddler. So what now? There are two really important things to remember before we jump to strategies… Adults must first recognize that it takes two people to be in a struggle, and since a toddler has an immature brain, the…

  • THE PERSONALITIES ARE COMING OUT!

Hey Reader! Remember that sweet little child who quietly watched everything during the first few weeks of school? She’s talking. A LOT. And the little boy who carefully followed every direction in September? He has discovered that making his friends laugh is really fun. The child who seemed easygoing? Suddenly has an opinion about everything and seems to be digging in his heels more often! Welcome to October! As children become comfortable with their teachers, friends, and routines, we often…

  • You are Shaping Hearts and Minds!

Hey Reader! You are shaping hearts and minds. As early educators in Christian childcare, your work matters deeply. Between lesson plans and diaper changes, remember these three powerful foundations: 1. Relationships = Trust Children thrive when they feel safe, seen, and loved. This starts with you. Consistent, compassionate care reflects God’s love and builds trust—especially in these early weeks. We talked about it last week, but it’s still the top priority this week! 2. Environment =…

  • From Us vs. Them to We: Fostering Collaboration in Shared Church Spaces

Hey Reader! So many of us work in churches where our classrooms are shared with Sunday School, Wednesday night and other church programming. It can be a challenge to share spaces when you feel like you’re in that room so many more hours than “they” are. Would you allow me to give you a gentle reminder today? “They” (church ministry leaders, church volunteers, even paid childcare workers) are actually on the same team as “us”. We are all called to minister to young families by caring for their…

  • The 5-Minute Practice That Changes Classrooms

Hey Reader! In the busyness of our classrooms, sometimes it’s hard to pause long enough to reflect on what’s actually happening. There are diapers to change, lessons to prepare, parents to update, and children who need our constant care and attention. Taking a few moments to reflect each day may be one of the most important habits/practices that a teacher can do. Reflection (pausing to intentionally consider) helps you move beyond simply “doing activities” (aka, babysitting) to intentionally…
