Wiring the Brain for Naptime? WHAT?!

Hey Reader!

This is the last week of our summer book series! Did you love it as much as I did? My kids are 22, 25, and 28 and i STILL have a full bookshelf of preschool picture books. I love them!

We can teach children so many skills using fun read alouds. I wonder if you’ve ever struggled with getting children to nap?

Often, children are almost naturally wired to resist words like “take a nap” or “go to bed”! Have you noticed that too? Brain science tells us that these resistant neural connections need to be retrained toward the positive. A great way to do that is to include positive stories about sleep, resting, napping, etc in your everyday routine – not at naptime when they’re already resistant – but throughout the day when there is no “danger” of them having to lay down anytime soon!

As you’re reading stories and singing songs about naptime and sleeping and resting in fun, positive ways, you’re actually rewiring their brains to be less resistant! Crazy, right?

Here are some fun books to try:

The Napping House – a hilarious and silly book where the whole house is taking a nap until a wakeful flea….well, you’ll just have to read it to see what happens!

A Nap In A Lap – a sweet little book about places animals nap (in a nest, on a tree, etc), but the best place to nap is in a lap!

Moo Moo, Nap Nap – this one is by our featured author from a couple of weeks ago – Sarah Philpott about farm animals getting sleepy and taking a nap.

Bedtime on Noah’s Ark – this one is by another of our featured authors in this series – Brock Eastman. We go through some animal bedtime routines…I wonder how a hippo brushes his teeth?

This is How Dinosaurs Say Goodnight

Good Night, Little Blue Truck

Remember, read the stories together in a fun, engaging when there is NO chance of naptime happening soon! This is when the rewiring in the brain happens – when it’s fun, positive, and no resistance!

I’d love to hear what some of your favorite naptime books (or just picture books, in general) are! Reply here and let us know or comment on one of our social media posts this week!
