Biblical Social-Emotional Learning

God’s design and purpose for our students includes the flourishing of their social and emotional experiences. This session will focus on exploring the biblical truths around key social-emotional domains. Starting with humans as holistic beings, we will explore five key domains for understanding biblical social-emotional learning (SEL). These domains are 1) self-awareness, 2) self-management, 3) responsible decision-making, 4) social-awareness, and 5) relationship skills. This session will present a biblical case for SEL and connect our students’ social-emotional experiences to God’s good design for their flourishing. Together, we’ll explore creation, the Psalms, the life of Christ, and the writings of Paul to engage SEL through a Christian worldview.

Dr. Tyler Groves serves as the Head of School at Whitefield Academy in Louisville, Kentucky. He is a co-author of “Growing with One Another: Social and Emotional Learning in Christian Perspective,” which combines contemporary research with a Christian perspective to address the growing need for social and emotional learning in young children. It serves as a resource for educators seeking to integrate faith-based principles into SEL programs, equipping students with the skills needed to navigate relationships and mental well-being effectively. Tyler also serves as an Adjunct Professor for New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where he teaches education courses. Tyler has earned a B.A. in Christian Ministry from Mississippi College, an M.A. in Christian Education from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and an Ed.D. from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Outside of all things education, he loves roasting his own coffee, learning, and spending time with his family.
