Tearful Drop-Offs? Try This.

Hey Reader!

These first few weeks of school are tough, aren’t they?
Let’s talk about separation anxiety.

Children are wired for attachment — God made all of us to need each other, trust each other, and rely on each other. So when the person they’ve depended on suddenly turns around and walks away? That can feel terrifying.

Right now, your littles are learning:

  • That you are safe
  • That their classroom is safe
  • That you will help meet their needs
  • That their parent always comes back
  • And that it can actually be fun while they’re with you!

Tips for Easing Separation Anxiety

Encourage a Positive Drop-Off Routine
Children mirror their parents’ emotions. Coach parents to be confident, excited, and positive:

“I love you so much! I can’t wait to hear about all the fun things you do today. See you after rest time!”

Stay Calm Yourself First (Co-Regulate)
If a child is upset, take three deep breaths before stepping in. Then offer:

  • “Would you like me to hold you?”
  • “Would you like to sit in the calming corner until you feel better?”

Avoid Saying “You’re OK”
They don’t feel OK in that moment. Try:

  • “It’s hard when mommy leaves. I’ll keep you safe until she gets back.”
  • “You’re scared in this new place. I’ll keep you safe today.”

Sing Safety Into Their Hearts
To the tune of Frère Jacques:

I am safe here, I am safe here, I am safe, I am safe.
My classroom is a safe place, my classroom is a safe place.
I am safe, I am safe.

Stay the Course
Some children take longer to trust. That’s OK. Be a steady, consistent, loving presence. They’ll get there.

We’re praying for you and the little ones you’re learning to love this year.

P.S. Reading stories about what children are experiencing is SO helpful in these tough seasons. Check out our podcast conversation with Valerie Ellis – author of Let’s Go! Bible Adventures and the all new Wild Faith Devotional for Kids (releasing Oct 7, but you can pre-order NOW). She has so many great ideas for helping children connect to God through stories
